Portland Takes Series in a Thriller

Hawks Look to Bear Down in Cowlitz

Portland 2 Edmonton 1

Portland 9 Edmonton 0

Doubleheader Story by Dayton Abbott

Portland and Edmonton got together Sunday looking to make up for lost time, having lost the first two games in their series to Mother Nature.

The Pickles emerged from the rainouts ready to play, shelling the Riverhawks 9-0 in a forgetful front end of a double header. Starting pitching was a strength of the Pickles but it wasn't as strong for the Hawks.

Portland's Peyton Jones limited the Hawks to 1 hit over four innings of work while Edmonton's Mike Gill pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up 7 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks.

After the Pickles coasted to 9-0 win, the Riverhawks hit the re-set button and focused on game 2 to tie the series.

Edmonton sent the newly acquired J.D. Callahan to the mound for the first this season and the Santa Clarita, CA, made his presence known. The 6’4" 190 pound righty suffocated the Pickles' offence, limiting it to one hit, one walk, and striking out three, in four scoreless innings.

Freddy Rodriguez was equally as strong for Portland, recording 5 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts.

The pitching battle extended to the relievers, and sent the game into extra ends. Clayton Loranger's sacrifice fly put the visitors up 1-0 but the home side tied things up in he bottom.

Then, in the bottom of 11 - the 18th inning of the day! - Portland scored an RBI for the 2-1 win and the series sweep.

The Riverhawks look to end the 9 game road trip on a high note when they play the Cowlitz Black Bears. First pitch is scheduled for Monday night at 7:35 MST.
