Riverhawks Season Draws to A Close With Over 100K Fans

The penultimate game of the season goes down as a loss for the Edmonton Riverhawks, as the Cats took a 4-1 win. After a momentum shifting three-run inning the Riverhawks couldn’t bounce back, with only four hits across the whole game.

led off the bottom of the 4th with the Hawks’ first hit of the game, Smashing it to the left field corner, Corl had a stand up double before stealing third during the next AB. The steal paid off, because Kelly scored on a wild pitch ball four that sent

 made his final start of the season tonight, tossing 5.0 frames. While he limited the HarbourCats to just four hits, Victoria also managed to score a trio of runs against KJ. With his 3 Ks in the game, Ward finishes with thirty-eight strikeouts on the season and a 5.93 ERA. Across his two seasons with the Riverhawks KJ holds the overall innings and strikeout records.

’s. With just a single and a pair of walks Loeppky was effective, but was removed from the 7th after the second walk. 

 took over from Loeppky, letting one of his inherited runners score from a single before shutting down the 7th. The 8th inning was a breeze, with Kilbreath retiring the side in order.

The Hawks couldn’t get any momentum going in the back half of the game, after the Cats pulled ahead. Strong pitching and defence held the Hawks from getting blown out at any point, but the bats were unable to string together any rallies.

Hawks Foiled by HarbourCats 5th Inning Rally 

It was a tense pitcher’s duel through the first half of the game. The

both scored a run in the second inning and the tie carried until 7th when the HarbourCats briefly led before the Hawks balanced the score again. The 8th didn’t go quite the same way, as the Cats struck for five runs and put the Hawks behind for the rest of the game.

With 5402 fans in attendance, the crowd brought their jolliest energy as we celebrated Christmas in August. With appearances from Santa and the Grinch, giveaways along with Santas Anonymous, and an auction for the incredibly popular Talus Balls jerseys the Hawks sported tonight and across the season. After the game, fans were treated to an absolutely spectacular display from 

, for the final Fireworks Friday of the year.

 capped off his Riverhawks season with another quality appearance. Pitching though 5.0, Barrett struck out a trio and only gave up three hits and a run. Finishing his season with a 1.73 ERA, Barrett stands in second place on the WCL Earned Run Average leaderboards. It’s been a fantastic second season with the Hawks for Barrett who surged into the top pitcher conversation in the second half.


 saw 2.1 innings of work. After a perfect 6th, Reece was tagged for his first run of the season from back-to-back-to-back Cats singles. Hemmerling still struck out a pair before walking in the leading run in the 8th. 

 took over in the 8th, and the HarbourCats broke the game open against him, with a bases-clearing triple and an RBI single putting the Hawks behind by five. 

 took the mound for the 9th, and tossed a quick perfect inning to bring the Hawks back up for their final chance at bat.

HarbourCats Break Tie Late, Hawks Can’t Catch Up

. The Hawks’ bats backed up an absolutely phenomenal start from

, who didn’t give up a single hit until the 7th inning.

Jans was absolutely dominant on the mound with 6.1 innings of work, the first six were scoreless and hitless, with only a hit batter and a fielder’s choice in the 3rd providing runners for the Lefties. In the 7th the Lefties were finally able to battle for a leadoff triple, who came around to score. Jans struck out three while retiring eleven Lefties in a row.

The Riverhawks surged into another early lead with a two-out rally in the 1st. 

was hit by a pitch, followed by a single from 

. With the bases loaded, free passes were granted to #9 Skyler Chang and 

, while #36 Jakob Poturnak drilled a single to right. Walking away with an early 3-0 lead as the Hawks batted through the order in the 1st.

The Hawks were at it again in the 2nd, with 

getting plunked before making it to third base on a steal and a pitching error. McGil would also be hit to put a pair of runners on base for Poole to drive home. Knocking a triple to the wall in centre-left, Poole earned two RBI before a Chang single drove him home.

At it again in the 3rd, Gardner smashed a triple to the wall, then was brought home by 

 grounding out. A walk to Ott then resulted in the eighth run of the game as a single from Poole sent him home

After a 4th inning reprieve from scoring, the Hawks resumed in the 5th as Overmars reached on an E6 throw into the dugout. 

replaced Ott in the 4th and hit an RBI double in his first AB. Poole walked, then Takayoshi reached on an E3, scoring Grino. Poole would come across for the third time on a Chang single to keep the Hawks on fire.

pitched after Jans. Kruekwich was only able to get though one out of the 7th, before Foden finished off the frame. Returning for the 8th, Foden gave up a pair of early singles and a single run before clearing the inning. A scoreless 9th belonged to 

, who secured the win and the sweep for the Hawks in front of 3519 cheering fans.

Riverhawks Complete Season Sweep of Lefties with 11-7 Win

 tonight. While the Lefties were able to briefly hold their first lead over the Hawks, the Edmonton bats teed off in the middle innings to lock in another series win.

The Hawks erased their one run deficit in the 4th, as 

 hit a 395 foot double to the warning track in centre field. A single to right from 

Edmonton’s lead came in the 5th, as they put up a four spot to secure the win and push way ahead of Port Angeles. The bottom half started with five straight hits, as 

 double sent both runners home. Corl ran to third on his play, then made it home on the next pitch to 

who singled. The last base hit of the chain belonged to 

, with Poole running first to third. A sac fly from Poturnak brought home Poole, and though the Hawks would get another runner on base, that limited their 5th inning scoring.

A bonus run came in the bottom of the 6th, as the top of the lineup had another rally. Ott and McGill both singled, and Corl was hit by a pitch to load the bags. Poole earned an RBI on a groundout to third before the frame ended.

 braved 7.0 innings of work tonight. Only tagged for a solo homer in the 2nd, Kobitowich kept up his recent streak of successful starts. Getting out of a one out bases loaded jam thanks to a 6-4-3 double play was the most treacherous it got for Kobitowich. The Edmontonian righty made his second-longest appearance of the season, and his record improves to 4-2 on the season.

A scoreless 8th was brought to the 3272 fans in attendance by 

, marking his third strong appearance out of the pen in the last week. 

handled the top of the 9th, finishing with a pair of Ks on a perfect inning.

The top of the order put in work today, as Ott, McGill, and Corl all had multi-hit games and they hit together for the crucial rallies. The Hawks will aim for their second sweep of the Lefties tomorrow night, as the series concludes. There will be plenty of wishes granted across

Riverhawks Nab Another Series Win Over Lefties

Locking in a season series victory against the 

 won 7-1 tonight. With seven strong innings from 

, and multi-hit games up and down the lineup the Hawks were having their best night ever! Hawks pitching made the Lefties look baffled as they struck out nine times against Edmonton arms.


The Riverhawks picked right up from where they left off with the Lefties last week. Scratching across a pair in the 2nd, 

 walked to lead off the frame then came around from back-to-back-to-back singles from 

 secured the second run before the frame ended. 

 scored in the 3rd after a leadoff double and a Poole sac fly.

A baffling number of the 4369 fans in attendance came to 

 decked out in their hottest pink, dressed up for Barbie Night. Pink concessions, Barbie trivia, and clips from the new movie entertained fans almost as the Riverhawks did.

It was the third start of the season for 

 and he started his game with a flash, picking off the runner at first for the final out of the 1st. Ridsdale relied on the Hawks defence again in the 2nd, as a sensational play at the plate prevented an early Lefties run from getting across. The Edmontonian had three straight 1-2-3 innings, from the 2nd to the 4th, and expanded his scoreless innings streak to 19.1 before allowing a run in the 5th. Ridsdale ended up throwing 7.0 innings on 84 pitches, striking out seven with only one walk.

The Hawks would add on again in the 6th, as a Poole leadoff single would be followed by a Lefties E6. The error moved Poole to third and left Overmars at first, but a Poturnak single would send home Poole for the Hawks’ fourth run.

A 7th inning rally followed to blow this one out of proportions, McGill walked before

 and Poole would both hit singles to load the bases. A walk to Overmars brought McGill home, and Boughton scored on a double play. With Poole alone at third, Poturnak’s third hit of the game counted for an RBI single. McGill also joined the three hit club tonight, with a two out spear in the 8th.

 took over in the 8th inning, and tossed a pair of scoreless frames. This continues a perfect season for the Beaumont product, who hasn’t allowed a single run in five relief appearances.
