Looking to turn things around as they cap off the series, the 

for the final meeting of the West Coast League season. With 2724 fans lining the stands of RE/MAX Field, the Hawks took an early lead and built on it in the back half of the game.

The Riverhawks combined for 12 hits, 5 of which went for extra bases. The Hawks also worked 6 walks, while pitching tossed 9 Ks. Thanks to a 6 inning start by David Sheppard (hitless into the 4th), the HarbourCats were held quiet through the majority of the game. All but two Hawks in the lineup were on base multiple times as the home team only had a single inning where they went down in order.

After a three-up-three-down top from starter

, the Hawks headed to the plate with a leadoff hit from 

. Moved to second from a fielder’s choice, Sato scored thanks to a smash single from 

 that made three HarbourCats collide as the ball touched down.

The 2nd was similarly easy for Sheppard. While he gave up a walk for Victoria’s first baserunner for the game, he still retired three other HarbourCats within 10 pitches total. As the Riverhawks came back to bat they immediately returned to laying the bat on the ball. 

 led off the inning with a smash single to the outfield. the next three Hawk batters all made contact, but they went for a fielder’s choice, a double with a tag on the bases, and a groundout to first to prevent Edmonton from increasing their score.

Sheppard continued his strong start with a 3rd inning where he struck out a pair, and forced a quick grounder to keep the Cats scoreless. 

 weathered a full count to start the bottom with a walk, then 

 followed up with a single to right. Andrews knocked a wormburner up the middle, but the HarbourCats turned it around into a double play, and another grounder left Edmonton with a runner stranded on third.

Sheppard surrendered his first hits of the game in the 4th, with a couple of singles to his first and third batters, then a single through the gap in left to score a runner. A bunt hit loaded the bags with just one out, but a fly behind second base and Sheppard’s sixth strikeout of the game meant that the Hawks came back to bat with a 1-1 tie.

While the Riverhawks were unable to make a dent in the 4th, Sheppard was back at it in the 5th. With a K to his first batter, the lefty gave up a pair of tough hits before a pair of soft fly balls retired the side. An error at third benefited

 as he flew down the line to reach base before the briefly delayed toss. Veatch continued to use that speed as he stole second and third on back-to-back pitches, right as Sato walked. A sac bunt from Kreisel put Edmonton back on top as Veatch was able to make it home on the squeeze play. Andrews walked to put Hawks on the corners before 

 rolled one that the Cats’ 3B missed for the second Victoria error of the frame. Sato scored on Easton’s error, and Andrews ran home a pitch later on a wild pitch, making it three runs in the inning scored without a hit. 

 provided the first hit of the 5th with a drive to the right field corner for an RBI double scoring Stewart. Another HarbourCats error let Vanslyke reach base before the inning ended on a fly ball.

Sheppard pitched into the 6th, and kept Victoria at bay for another frame, with a pair of pop ups and another K to make up for his second issued walk. With two outs on the scoreboard Kreisel turned the inning around with a deep fly to left, bouncing off the wall in the corner for a double. Cole stole third base, but was left stranded from a strikeout.

Taking over in the 7th, #11 Brandon Craven hit the mound, and while he gave up a leadoff single, the runner was quickly erased thanks to Green gunning down the runner attempting to take second. Craven took charge afterwards with a strikeout and a fly ball to keep the inning clean. Andrews led off the Hawks’ half with a single into no man’s land for his second multi-hit game in a row, then an FC swapped him for Stewart at first. A walk to Vanslyke lined things up for 

 to crush a ball to right and send a runner home. A wild cut off throw send Gonzalez to third and score Vanslyke. A wild pitch cleared the bases as Gonzalez came home to make it 8-1. A blast to the track gave Veatch another chance to showcase his speed, gunning it to third base with an easy triple. The two-out rally continued as Sato walked and stole second, but it was cut off as a pair was stranded due to a strikeout.

Craven returned for the 8th, giving up a broken bat single and a walk. An error on a grounder led to Victoria scoring their second run with no outs. A hit batter loaded the bags, and it paid off with a pair of runs coming home on a fly to left. That would be it for Craven, as he was replaced with #

 with no outs on the board and a pair in scoring position. While another run came home on a groundout, Combs contained the inning, including fielding a comebacker cleanly to preserve the Edmonton lead. Looking to re-establish their deep insurance the Hawks strode into the box in the bottom half and had Middlemiss work a walk before Stewart would mash to left and push the lead up a run.

Combs returned to the bump for the 9th, and after a hit batter the Hawks cleaned the game up with a fly out and a double play.

Riverhawks Avoid Sweep, Power Past HarbourCats

EDMONTON, AB—Lots of excited children at REMAX Field on Wednesday (June 10). The Edmonton Riverhawks hosted their annual ‘School Spirit and Mascot Mania” game when they hosted the Victoria HarbourCats in West Coast League action.

Sadly, the 8,503 Edmonton area elementary school students, their teachers, support staff and parents couldn’t spur the home team onto victory. The Riverhawks dropped a 8-5 decision to the HarbourCats in game two of their three game series. Victoria has won the first two games between the teams this week as they move to 5-6 on the season. The Riverhawks drop to 3-7.

Both teams got the crowd excited in the top of the first inning. Victoria’s #11 Brady Hewitt reached first on a passed ball. With two outs, Hewitt tried to steal home when the ball left the hand of Riverhawks catcher #29 AJ Marchetti. Marchetti was able to shovel the ball forward to charging Edmonton starter #50 Lucas Webber-Kitching. The Riverhawks pitcher was able to make the tag at the plate to end the inning.

In the second inning, the crowd were on their feet when #33 Marcus Nolen got caught in a rundown trying to come home from third base. He was thrown out in a pitcher-to third base-to catcher-to shortstop-to first baseman to shortstop series. That brought up #40 Lucas Le Gras who stroked the ball up the middle to score #15 Tristan Buehring and # 9 Dryden Fuoco to give Victoria a 2-0 lead.

Things began to unravel for the Riverhawks in the fifth inning. Victoria scored three more runs as they loaded the bases and took advantage of some less than spectacular fielding by the Riverhawks. That resulted in #12 Riley Starko being pulled with two out and the score 6-0 HarbourCats . He was the losing pitcher in the contest going an inning and two thirds, giving up four runs on three hits, had two walks and struck out one.

Edmonton fans got something to cheer about runs wise in the bottom of that fifth inning. Designated hitter # 37 Connor Cavnar led the inning off with a single off HarbourCats reliever #24 Houston Tomlinson and scored on #3 Devin Simonton’s ground out.

And there was more in the sixth inning: #1 Shiryu Sato led off the inning by doubling down the left field line. He scored two batters later when #51 Easton Andrews placed the ball between first and second base and wound up with an RBI single to cut the deficit to four—it was 6-2.

After a 38 minute rain delay, Victoria added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Nolen walked and scored on a wild pitch delivered by Riverhawks newcomer #41 Trey Nance. #26 Declan Brown reached base on a fielders choice and then scored on an RBI double off the bat of Hewitt

In their half of the seventh, the Riverhawks loaded the bases off reliever #52 Asher Clark. .#2 Drew Veatch hit a ball ‘with eyes’ which dropped into the gap between first, second and right field to plate #31 Kotaro Wakui. The next batter was #10 Cole Kreisel who delivered an RBI single scoring Simonton to make the count 8-4. That did it for Asher Clark who was replaced by HarbourCat teammate #13 Jack Clark. He facted Sato as his first batter. He hit into a double play but was able to get Marchetti across to make the score 8-5 Victoria.

Offensively: Buehring was 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI for Victoria. Shepard was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Fuoco went 2 for 5 with two runs scored while Le Gras was 1 for 4 with two runs batted in.

Edmonton was led by Sato and Andrews who were both 2 for 4. Sato had a run scored while Andrews had 1 RBI. Veatch was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Kriesel was 1 for 5 with an RBI.

Tomlinson picked up his first win of the season on the mound in relief for Victoria. He went two innings, giving up three hits, two runs and walked one. Jack Clark earned the save as he faced nine batters through three innings and gave up a hit.

The teams will conclude their series Thursday (June 11) with a 7:05 PM MDT opening pitch. Thursday’s (June 11) contest-the final one of the series-has been deemed: “Theatre Kids Are Taking Over”. Any youth wearing a theatre character costume will get in free if they present themselves at the Riverhawks box office! Youth must be accompanied by a paying adult. Hawks Continue Skid With Morning Loss to Cats

 were hoping that home field would be an advantage as they opened up a six game West Coast League homestand. The Riverhawks took the

 with the visitors coming away with a 4-0 victory.

The win snapped Victoria’s three-game losing streak as they improved to 4-6 on the season. The Riverhawks fell to 3-6. There were 3,159 fans on hand for Strike Out Cancer night. The promotion, presented by 

 saw the Riverhawks wearing special, purple-coloured uniforms. They were auctioned off online supporting the Kids with Cancer Society and the Riverhawks Community Foundation.

Victoria scored four runs on eight hits. The Riverhawks had three hits and committed one error in the ball game. It was the HarbourCats second straight victory and third of the season in contests between the two squads.

The HarbourCats opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. #26 Declan Brown singled to open the inning off Edmonton Starter #19 Carter Funk. Two batters later, #14 David Krahn went ‘yard’ over the fence in left field. It was a two-run shot to give Victoria the 2-0 lead on Krahn’s first homer of the season.

Krahn was involved in scoring Victoria’s third run of the game in the top of the eighth. #15 Tristan Beuhring led off the inning by being walked by Riverhawks reliever #40 Nikau Heeney. Beuhring crossed the plate when Krahn slammed a single into left field and was tagged out trying to steal second. Krahn finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

In the top of the ninth, Victoria’s #28 Logan Shepard singled to second base and scored when # 33 Marcus Nolan sent a one out sacrifice fly to left field to make it 4-0.

#54 Hudson Lance started for the HarbourCats and was the winning pitcher. He went six innings, giving up no runs on two hits and striking out three. Fink went seven innings as he suffered his first defeat of the season. He surrendered two runs on six hits, striking out five and walked none. #19 Daniel Tovar earned his first save of the year for Victoria tossing three innings of one hit ball and striking out two.

The two teams have a short turnaround as they will be back on the field at REMAX Wednesday morning for an 11 AM MDT start time. It is the Riverhawks’ “School Spirit & Mascot Mania”. Hawks Shut Out As Loss Streak Hits 3 Games

Fresh off a momentous win at Serauxmen Stadium last night, the Edmonton Riverhawks returned for game two of their series with the Nanaimo NightOwls. While the Hawks had successes across a plethora of innings in their previous game, tonight Edmonton was unable to repeat that performance. Edmonton only had more than one runner on base a single time though the game, and Easton Andrews was the only multi-hitter. Shiryu Sato reached base in all of his plate appearances, between a single with a stolen base and two walks.

The Riverhawks were held quiet through the start of the game, only getting a hit from last night’s hero 

 in the 2nd. Meanwhile, Nanaimo took an initial 2-run lead thanks to a leadoff triple in the 2nd followed by a sac play and a couple hits before Edmonton starter 

 could diffuse the situation with a strikeout.

The Riverhawks attempted to mount a response in the 3rd, after 

 hit a leadoff single to right, then stole second base before 

hit a single of his own. The Japanese pair would end up stranded as the frame ended on a strikeout.

The 4th started with two fast ground outs for Edmonton, even though 

reached base on a single to left, the Hawks were still held scoreless after a called ꓘ. A five-pitch walk to Sato started off the 5th, but he would again end up stranded as the Hawks were unable to put any rallies together through the first half of the game.

Coxen was able to keep Nanaimo at bay until the 5th, as after what should have been a routine out was spoiled by a throwing error. The runner then stole before being sent home by a single. Thankfully the inning ended on the Hawks’ second caught runner of the game, as #36 Jason Green’s arm was firing on all cylinders. Coxen would finish his start with 2 earned runs on 5 hits, with a single walk and 4 strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

 took over for the bottom of the 6th, while he gave up a leadoff walk, a double play with the runner caught trying for third base ended the inning and kept Nanaimo from adding on. Sato, the only Riverhawk to have multiple trips to the bases this evening, earned a two-out walk in the 7th, but a weak fly from left prevented him from getting any further than first base. Colville continued his solid work in the 8th, getting a three-up-three-down inning to finish with 2.0 innings pitched, and only a single walk against his record.

 took over for the bottom of the 8th to try and keep Nanaimo from adding on any more runs. Andrews led off the 9th with a speedy single to keep the Hawks alive, but it would be another frame with a single runner stranded as the Riverhawks were unable to put any offence together this evening.

Riverhawks Shut Out In Nanaimo, Series Evened

 continued their inaugural West Coast League road trip of 2026 at 

. They moved up Vancouver Island and hammered the host 

 16-9 on Friday. The NightOwls entered the game atop of the North Division standings with a 4-2 record and had swept the Kelowna Falcons earlier this week. The Riverhawks were 2-3 after dropping two of three to the HarbourCats in Victoria. Edmonton scored 16 runs on 15 hits and had one error. Nanaimo had 9 runs on 10 hits and one error.

 finished the contest with four doubles. The first baseman notched his second homer of the year as he took the Nanaimo starter over the wall in the top of the 1st inning. It was a three-run homer as he plated 

. Those set his RBI total to 13, which puts Andrews into the WCL lead.

The NightOwls were quick to close the deficit in the bottom of the first. #23 Ethan Reynolds doubled up the middle to score #7 Aiden Nykoluk. That was followed by an RBI sacrifice to centerfield by #28 Jacob Hayes which brought #3 Talan Zenk in from third base. Nanaimo tied it at three when #17 Davis Downer ground out to the third baseman which allowed Reynolds to score. Those three runs coming off Edmonton Starter

. Sheppard was the winning pitcher in this one, going five innings throwing a two hitter with two walks and six strikeouts. Those three runs he surrendered in the first were the only ones he gave up in the contest.

Edmonton regained the lead in the top of the 2nd thanks to more dingers. Leadoff man 

 smacked the ball to right-centre field leaving the yard to make the score 4-3. On Andrews’ next plate appearance, the Fort Worth, Texas native blasted the ball to straightaway centre. It was his second three run homer of the night as he cashed in Fox and 

. Nanaimo’s Morrison was yanked after the 2nd inning, giving up seven runs on six hits with two strike outs and two walks. He was the losing pitcher in this contest.

In the fourth inning, the Riverhawks load the bases twice off NightOwls reliever #10 Jakin Rhone. The first time, Andrews stroked a two-run double which brought in 

 and Wakui who were both hit by pitches to start the inning. Andrews would later score on an RBI double off the bat of

. The Riverhawks tacked on another in the 5th: Fox singled up the middle off NightOwls reliever #30 Jalan Patrik to score Clements making it 11-3.

The 6th inning saw Edmonton score four more times. Three of the runs came on a home run by 

. The other run resulted when Wakui doubled to left center to score Clements. Nanaimo added a run in the 6, and two more in the 7th. In the 8th, Sato led off with a stand-up triple and scored when Clements chopped the ball over the first baseman for an RBI double. Sato wound up 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, Fox was 2-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, while Wakui went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

The NightOwls staged a late rally in the bottom of the 9th as they scored three runs off reliever 

 to cut the margin to seven runs (16-9). Coombs pitched four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, with two strike outs and a walk.

Riverhawks head coach Jake Lanferman says that even though this game wasn’t in doubt, they have a lot of respect for Nanaimo. “They are always chippy and play hard. We are going to have to do the little things right, have a better approach at the plate and play gritty baseball if we want to win the series.”

Lanferman says the team has done a great job of bonding on their first road swing of the year. “We are getting to know each other better and understand our coaching staff’s expectations. I believe we will compete the rest of the weekend and finish strong coming home.”

When asked about whether the priority this early in the season is concentrating on his own club rather than the opposition, the Riverhawks skipper stated. “The focus is trying to understand what situations we can put the players in to best succeed. Whether that’s how the batting order is created, what order we’re using our pitchers or what defensive positions the guys are playing. That is the challenge and we are continuing to learn the team in the early stages of the season.”

A big offensive night from Easton Andrews starts the series strong

Longball Helps Riverhawks Win Opener in Nanaimo

Continuing their first road series of the season, the Edmonton Riverhawks faced off against the Victoria HarbourCats for the second time tonight. Looking to redeem themselves after last night’s loss, the Hawks came swinging right off the bat and ended up with a 13-11 win. Edmonton’s offence stayed strong and patient through the game, combining for 11 hits and 15 walks. There were struggles at points as the defence combined for four errors, and late inning struggles from the bullpen led to Victoria being able to stay competitive. The bright spots in the line up belong to Easton Andrews going 3-for-5 with seven RBIs and a home run, Matt Vanslyke with a hit and four walks, and Kotaro Wakui, who was on base four times in six plate appearances.

The Riverhawks had an easygoing 1st inning at bat, as leadoff hitter 

 was also walked to load the bags. Cleanup hitter 

 got to live up to his role, as he drilled the ball to right-centre and sent two runners home with a double. 

 followed Andrews’ lead and smacked a 2-run double to nearly the exact same location to make it a 4-0 ballgame with just a single out. 

 was walked to load the bases once again, restart the order, and chase Victoria’s starter Daniel Tovar before a strikeout ended the half-inning. 

 got his start in the bottom half with a pretty safe lead to play with, and while he issued a walk and a hit, he left the inning unscathed thanks in part to a runner gunned down by his battery-mate 

The Hawks weren’t done after the first as Wakui took a rip at his first pitch of the second and laced a double to the left field corner. An E6 let Vanslyke stay at first before a wild pitch sent both runner up a bag. Another mash from Andrews down to the left corner send both runners home and made it four runs batted in by the Hawks DH with a single. With an embiggened lead for his second inning on the bump, Halvorson gave up his first major hit with Victoria’s leadoff triple. A misplay on a pickoff attempt led to the first HarbourCats run, and was followed by a sacrifice fly to cut down the Hawks’ lead.

Dion led off the 3rd with a walk on four straight balls, then was balked to second base before Fox was issued a free pass as well. Vanslyke’s single to shallow left sent Dion home. After a one-pitch out to start the bottom of the 3rd, Halvorson issued a four-pitch walk but was able to corral the frame with a fly out and his first K of the game.

 got on base for the first time in the 4th with a walk, after he had popped out twice prior. A hit from Dion gave the Riverhawks another runner, then Fox walked before Wakui hit a grounder up the first base foul line and under the outfield fence for a 2 RBI ground-rule-double. A walk to Vanslyke re-loaded the bases with two outs, but a ground out stopped the Hawks from hitting double digits in the 4th. The HarbourCats took Halvorson’s 55th pitch for a ride as a home run to left flew for their third run. Then after a walk, the Hawks had a defensive breakdown from a bobble at third and overthrows to first, second, and home leading to Victoria’s fourth run on a pair of errors. Halvorson got a meeting at the mound to regroup, but another misplay at third handed Vic another run and ended Chase’s night. 

came in and cleaned up the inning with a grounder, a foul pop up and a thrown out runner at third.

With a couple of early outs, the Hawks had their first scoreless inning of the game in the 5th, stranding Scott and Gonzalez on base. Fink stayed in the game and started his first fresh inning with a strikeout looking. In the 6th the Hawks stayed patient and received three walks in a row (with a caught stealing) to Wakui, Vanslyke, and Andrews. Another balk put a pair in scoring position for 

 (in his second at bat after pinch hitting in the 4th) to crash an RBI single up the left field line. A play at the plate goes Victoria’s way but the Hawks still get their 10th run. Fink met his first bits of resistance from the Cats as they work a double and a walk off of him. A rough bounce to short gives Victoria a run, but Fink limits the damage to just a single run in the 6th.

came into the game for the bottom of the 7th after a three-up-three-down Hawks’ half. A walk, a single, and a hit batter loaded the bags for the Cats with just one out. A strikeout and a sac fly give some resistance before the HarbourCats earned another run before a dropped third strike held the Hawks’ lead by two going into the 8th.

Facing a newly slimmed lead the Riverhawks stayed patient with walks to Fox and Vanslyke. Then in his fifth plate appearance of the game, Easton Andrews clobbered a deep drive to right field for his first home run as a Riverhawk. Taking the mound afterwards with a renewed 5-run lead, 

 walked the bases loaded. After a K, a misplay on the transfer at second led to a Cats run and the bags staying loaded, leading to a walked in tenth Victoria run. That would be the end of the road for Gonzalez, and 

would replace him. After walking in another run for the Cats, Colville worked a pair of Ks to escape the inning and once again leave the Hawks with a two run lead.

With the Hawks unable to make anything happen in the 9th, it was up to Colville to carry them through. A leadoff infield single and a drop shot to shallow centre put the tying run at the plate with no outs. A 6-4-3 double play evened out things and put Logan just three strikes away, and he was able to use four more pitches to notch them and secure the win.
