The Edmonton Riverhawks got off to a blazing start on Canada Day, and took it for a 11-2 win over the Wenatchee AppleSox. It was an unrelenting offence for the Hawks as they had nineteen hits across their nine innings.
The Hawks 1st inning rally began with a pair of errors by the same AppleSox player. The Wenatchee starter bobbled the ball, then winged it over first to send leadoff hitter #15 Daniel Calabrese to second base. #10 Jonny McGill scored Calabrese with a single, followed by #42 Tom Poole with a base hit of his own. The hitting continued as #9 Skyler Chang and #30 Noah Boughton also singled, each plating more runs. After #34 Nico Libed would hit a beastly triple, the frame would end with the Hawks batting through the order.
More runs followed for Edmonton, in the 2nd Calabrese led off with a big triple, and he was eventually sent home by Poole. In the 4th, #2 Jack Wheatley and Calabrese had back to back singles before #14 Tommy Takayoshi brought Wheatley across the plate with an RBI groundout.
A huge rally erupted in the 7th for Edmonton, with three straight singles and a pair of walks brought home the eight run, with the AppleSox walking McGill with loaded bases.
#23 Brady Kobitowich settled into a solid start. After two outs his first inning of work was interrupted by a short rain delay, Kobitowich had a bit of trouble getting out of the frame, giving up a pair of runs when play resumed, Brady then came back to complete a solid 6.0 innings, striking out five and only only walking a pair.
In the 7th the 6761 fans in attendance were treated to a relief appearance from #18 Riley Barrett who tossed a pair of scoreless frames, including a pair of strikeouts in the 8th. It was #40 Shaun Atamanchuk pitching in his regular 9th inning spot, clearing the final frame easily.
It was a fantastic display from the Riverhawks, Ossanna went 4-for-5, Libed had three hits and four RBI, and Boughton, McGill, and Poole also had multi-hit games. The only batter who missed out on the hit parade was Takayoshi, but he still had an RBI groundout.
The series finishes with the rubber match tomorrow afternoon. A 1:05pm start will have the Hawks try to nab their first home series win as they wrap up the first half of the season. Tickets are available on tickets.gohawks.ca.
