Winning their third Canada Day in a row, Hawks beat the Port Angeles Lefties in sellout!
Box ScoreBy Cody F. Schmidt
The Edmonton Riverhawks wished a sellout crowd the best Happy Canada Day they could with a 6-3 win over the Port Angeles Lefties. An explosive 1st put them in the driver’s seat, and an incredible start from Carson Latimer kept the Lefties at bay. With the second July 1 win in a row in front of a full RE/MAX Field, the Riverhawks are starting a bit of a tradition.
It was an early Edmonton onslaught, as the Hawks loaded the bags in the 1st with a single and two walks. With only one out #32 Jason Green popped a 2 RBI single into the right gap, bringing both #13 Grant Yzermans and #48 Max Stagg home. The bases re-loaded after a walk to #1 Shiryu Sato, a four-pitch base on balls to #4 Jaxon Fox brought #35 Trent Lenihan home and chased Port Angeles starter Kole Acker from the game. The Hawks batted through the order in the 1st to start off with a 3-0 lead.
#36 Mitchell Middlemiss took off on a 3rd inning liner through the gap and was able to reach second base after a bobbled play in centre let him advance. A walk to #4 Jaxon Fox followed, but with two outs already a fly ball prevented any Hawks from scoring. A different two-out story in the 4th as after Stagg was plunked, as Lenihan belted a double to the warning track, adding on to Edmonton’s score.
Responding to Port Angeles’ run in the 6th #41 Drew Veatch would lead off with a ground rule double up the third base line. The ball bouncing out of the playing surface prevented Veatch from racing to third on the hit. A pair of 6-3 plays from Phelps and Yzermans would get Drew home to keep the Hawks up by 4. Adding on to the lead in the 8th, Yzermans singled then stole second and was followed by a Stagg and Lenihan walks to load the bases before Green would hit home Yzermans with a groundout.
Fireballer #55 Carson Latimer lit up the radar gun with his third start of the year for the Riverhawks. Starting off with a 1-2-3 inning, Latimer hit 99 mph which serves as the hardest toss in Hawks history. Only allowing a single hit through the 3rd, Latimer continued to make quick work of the Lefties. An E4 and a walk gave Latimer his first runner in scoring position in the 4th, but a clutch 6-3 double play on an infield liner saved the inning. While he made it through the 5th unscathed, Latimer would walk a batter before a high bouncing wild pitch let the runner reach third. A sac fly would break Latimer’s shutout, but he would retire his next batter with a swinging K to finish the frame. Tossing an even 6.0 frames, Latimer would tie his season high, and be tagged with only one run and two hits.
Taking over in the 7th was #21 Myles Chamberlain. He tossed a scoreless frame with only a walk marring his record. The 8th was #40 Rece Allensworth’s who similarly had a quick inning with just a walk. In his usual spot in the 9th, was #14 Tate Dearing who got caught for a walk and a triple to the wall for the second Lefties run. A single scored the runner from third to put us at the final 6-3 score.
Clad in special Canadian Tuxedo jerseys, the Riverhawks welcomed 9200 fans to a sold out RE/MAX Field Canada Day special. This is the second July 1 sellout in a row for the Hawks.
