The Edmonton Riverhawks were back at it tonight against the Port Angeles Lefties. Striking early, the Hawks were able to continue their winning streak and make it four games in a row. Taking the series with the Lefties with this win, the Riverhawks move to 11-12 on the season.
The 10-2 victory was a whole team affair, with every original member of the lineup getting on base at least once, and multiple pinch hitters also joining in on the fun. Mitchell Middlemiss was on base four times with two hits, Chris Parkin knocked in a pair of RBI, and Shiryu Sato knocked a deep ground rule double along with a couple free bags an a steal.
The Lefties faced a lefty as #43 Treyton DesLauriers took the mound for the Riverhawks. While his control faltered with a hit leadoff batter, Treyton turned the 1st around quickly with a strikeout and a pair of infield ground balls. Despite #1 Shiryu Sato also getting plunked, the Hawks got caught with an inning ending double play as a liner got nabbed by a stretching Lefties second baseman before a toss to first doubled off Sato.
DesLauriers took to the 2nd as he turned up the heat and fanned a pair of Lefties to retire the side in order. In the bottom half of the 2nd, #54 Easton Andrews led off with a four-pitch walk before a fielder’s choice replaced him on first with #36 Mitchell Middlemiss. Mitchell made it to third on successive wild pitches, while #57 Finnegan Stewart earned a walk on four straight balls. A missed toss on a routine play gave the Riverhawks their first run, without a hit! A bouncer to third base from #34 Tony Moore was tossed wide to first and gave enough space for Middlemiss to run home, and Moore to get to second. An errant full count pitch to #24 Cale Clark loaded the bags with two outs, and then #2 Drew Veatch was hit by a pitch, the Hawks got their second hitless run of the inning. Lefties starter Devon Hewitt continued to struggle with control as he gave up a ground rule double to Sato, who banged a shot to the muddy warning track for a pair of RBI. A walk to #39 Chris Parkin re-loaded the bags as the Hawks batted around and sent Andrews back to the plate for his second plate appearance of the inning. Sadly A groundout up the middle ended the early-game rally, but the Riverhawks combined for a 4-run lead on just a single hit.
The Lefties earned their first hit off DesLauriers in the 3rd with a close play at first, but Treyton turned around a whiff of a K and a pair of grounders to keep Port Angeles quiet. Middlemiss started the Hawks half with a single then took second on a wild pitch through the Port Angeles catcher’s legs. Another hit from Stewart put Hawks on the corners, but a fielder’s choice play at the plate off of #32 Jason Green’s contact prevented a run for Edmonton, after another FC the Hawks were able to gain another run from a Clark RBI base hit. Veatch got hit again to load the bags as the umpires issued warnings before a pop up ended the first third of the game.
The Lefties woke up in the 4th as they started off with a ground-rule double and a single to right before a fly to left earned them a run. A squeeze bunt against DesLauriers advanced the Port Angeles runners, but Treyton fanned another pair to end the frame thanks to some tricky pitch mixing. A two-out single from Middlemiss prevented the Hawks from going down in order in their side of the 4th, but a pop fly prevented any further action.
Working into the 5th, DesLauriers only gave up his first walk of the game, followed by a hit batter. A 6-4-3 double play lessened the tension for Treyton. A single up the middle scored the remaining Lefties runner and retired DesLauriers for the night. He tossed for 4.2 innings with a pair of earned runs and 5 hits allowed while striking out 6 Port Angeles batters. #33 Logan Colville took over with just a Leftie on first and two outs, and induced a quick pop up.
Getting the mound for the 6th, #41 Trey Nance came in and pitched a 1-2-3 inning including a crowd pleasing K and a foul fly out nabbed by Middlemiss. Drew Veatch kicked off the Hawks’ 6th with speed to beat his infield single, then nabbed second on the following pitch. Sato took a walk then both runners pulled off a double-steal. Taking the huge opportunity Parkin smacked a laser hit up the middle and cashed in both Veatch and Sato to put the Hawks up 7-2.
Nance came back out for the 7th gunning down batters with back-to-back strikeouts and a foul pop up for his second spotless inning of work. A walk to Green started the post-stretch part of the game, followed by a textbook bunt single by Clark. Pinch hitter #20 Oliver Clements earned a free pass by being plunked and loaded the bases. #3 Devon Simonton pinch hit an infield grounder, but a wide throw from the Lefties opened up the chance for the bases to clear and the Hawks to make it to double digits on the error.
#7 Chris Massey got the ball for the top of the 8th, and continued the streak of clean pitching with a three-up-three-down 1ꓘ frame. #52 Adrien Blanchet pitched the 9th and did his part as well, only facing a runner due to a dropped third strike with two out.
The series with Port Angeles concludes tomorrow afternoon as the Riverhawks will attempt their first sweep of the season. After a Monday rest day, the Hawks will welcome the Bellingham Bells for a three game mid-week set including a Canada Day spectacular on Wednesday, July 1.
