From the West Coast League to the majors!
Teams in Major League Baseball appear to like what they're seeing in the Edmonton Riverhawks organizations. They selected five Riverhawks in the just completed 2024 Draft and then one club signed one other player as a free agent.
Former Riverhawk outfielder Ivan Brethowr got the ball rolling. He was the first to go as the Chicago Cubs selected him in the 7th Round with the 212th pick. Brethowr was a big part of the Hawks inaugural season in 2022.
Ryan Magdic was the next to go, being picked number 406 overall in the 14th round by the Oakland A's. The big Canadian kid is proficient at a number of positions.
Then, in the 17th round, the Toronto Blue Jays used the 517th pick to select shortstop Gavin Smith. The shortstop joined the Hawks this summer right out of high school.
It didn't stop there.
In the 18th round, the Cleveland Guardians selected former Riverhawks pitcher Izaak Martinez. Izaak was a member of the Hawks’ inaugural season in 2022.
Vicarte Domingo's incredible season on the mound also got the attention of San Diego. The Padres picked him in the 19th round with the 570th selection.
Finally, after the draft, popular catcher Tommy Takayoshi signed a free agent deal with the Oakland A's.
The draft selections and free agent signing means some of these players have already left town to pursue these new opportunities, which is the nature of summer collegiate baseball.
Overall, there were 22 West Coast League alumni selected in the MLB Draft, including the number one selection overall, Travis Bazzana. The former Corvallis Knight was selected by the Cleveland Guardians.
