First Riverhawk Selected in MLB Draft!

2024-07-16

Chicago Cubs Select Ivan Brethowr

Outfielder Ivan Brethowr has become the first person who sported Edmonton Riverhawks silks to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. The Chicago Cubs used the 212th pick in the 7th round to select the big outfielder.

The 6'6" 250 pounder played a key role in the Riverhawks 2022 inaugural season, finishing among the team leaders with 5 home runs and 21 RBIs.

The 21 year old, who was born in Matthews, North Carolina, attended Arizona State University before moving on to the University of Californian at Santa Barbara.

The West Coast League showed well at the 2024 MLB Draft, as the number one selection (Cleveland Guardians) was former WCL MVP Travis Bazzana of Oregon State. The former Corvallis Knights slugger is the second WCL alumnus to be taken as the first overall pick in the MLB Draft, following in the footsteps of Adley Rutschman in 2019.

In addition to one other former WCL player being selected in this year's first round, there were 20 WCL players selected on day two of the 2024 MLB Draft.
