Edmonton Riverhawks Set to Debut in Capital City
2022-06-06

Kicking Off A Week Full of Great Ball & Fantastic Fun!
Home Opener presented by Global TV kicks off week of great baseball, cool themes & outstanding prizes!
The Edmonton Riverhawks are set to make their debut at RE/MAX Field as they host the Portland Pickles tonight in their first Home Opener, sponsored by Global TV. It’s the first of a three-game set with the Pickles.
The home side will be bolstered by the weekend arrival of nine players from south of the border, led by Will Rogers, the catcher turned outfielder from Arizona State University. Rogers, who was taking batting practice at RE/MAX Field yesterday, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th Rround of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.
The Riverhawks return home from a 1-5 road trip through B.C., where three of the losses were in extra innings. After dropping three games in Kamloops, the Hawks went on to Nanaimo to capture their first WCL win before losing the next two. The highlight of the trip was a grand slam by 6’ 6” 240-pound Ivan Brethower in the lone win.
The first West Coast League pitch in our city is set for 7:05 tonight. However, fans are asked to arrive early as Honey Ham Jam will be playing live music out front, where there will also be a bouncy castle courtesy RE/MAX and clowns from the Shrine Circus. There is also a lot more to explore on the concourse, including a radar gun at Bush League Baseball where you can see how fast you can throw a ball!
Fans are asked to be in their seats by 6:45 for a special pregame ceremony. The Riverhawks play on historic land within Treaty 6 Territory and, as this is National Indigenous History Month, the pregame ceremony will pay homage to our history and celebrate our journey moving forward together with the Indigenous Peoples.
Fans will also get their first look at the kinds of prizes that will be given away at Riverhawks games this year, which include everything from diamond rings to camping getaways to trips for two to anywhere Swoop Airlines flies!
After Monday’s Home Opener, the Riverhawks’ home stand will see two more games against Portland and then a three-game set with the Port Angeles Lefties. The games will also feature cool theme nights:
Tuesday, June 7 Mascot Mania:
Edmonton’s family of mascots welcome the latest addition, River, to their clan. Will the bad boy of mascots, Portland’s Dillon the Pickle, crash the party?
Wednesday, June 8: Stand With Ukraine
We welcome Ukrainian Nationals and their host families to the game as our guests, including two 7-year-old twins from Ukraine who will toss out the ceremonial first pitches. Viter singers and dancers will perform while we’ll pass the Cheemo Pyrogy, have a Stawnichy Sausage Eating Contest plus a 50-50, all to raise money for Ukrainian Canadian Social Services.
Friday, June 10 Friday Night Fireworks
Our first ever game with the Port Angeles Lefties will conclude with Friday Night Fireworks, a new tradition touched off by an Edmontonian who is well known for lighting up the night sky, John Adria of Uncle John’s Fireworks.
Saturday, June 11 Strike Out Hate
Our Pride Night game will feature Edmonton’s hilarious Party Queens, prizes from Pride Tape and much more. Come prepare to be entertained and have all sorts of fun as we strike out hate and hit a home run for diversity.
Sunday, June 12 Hawks & Hounds
Edmonton’s Humane Society leads the charge as we welcome people to bring their dogs to the game. We’ll have a parade of pups, hounds doing cool tricks and see who listens to commands best: a dog or a mascot! Proceeds from the 50-50 go to the Humane Society to help our friends there take even better care of dogs and cats.
