The Riverhawks To Honor a Family Close to Home this Summer
The Edmonton Riverhawks will take to the field in 2024 with one of their own very close to their hearts. Every Riverhawks jersey this season will sport a “V” with a blue heart around it on the upper left part of the jersey.
The V stands for Vanderwekken. Nathan Vanderwekken. Vandy, as he’s called by his teammates, plays on the Edmonton Collegiate Hawks. Earlier this year, Nathan tragically lost his dad, Tim, and stepmom, Sarah. The loss shocked everyone in their home town of Barrhead as well as everyone in the Riverhawks family.
Vandy is a hugely popular player in the Riverhawks organization. He came into the collegiate program two years ago as a raw rookie. His dedication to his craft has been unmatched and, as a result, his development as a player has been incredible.
The third-year junior plays second and third base for the Hawks. The fun fact he can brag about is he gets hit by more pitches than any other Hawk!
Away from the ball diamond, Vandy attends King’s University, studying psychology and kinesiology.
Tim and Sarah are no doubt looking down with incredible pride watching Nathan play ball, study books and embrace life.
The Riverhawks are proud to sport the Vandy "V" on their jerseys for the 2024 season.
