Game 2 against the Bells brings a new identity to the team
By Larry Read
The West Coast League team in Edmonton will don a new ‘identity’ when they take to RE/MAX Field tonight. The 2025 Riverhawks crew will meet up with the Bellingham Bells in game two of their series as the Edmonton Green Onion Cakes.
The Green Onion Cakes are this year’s alternate identity jersey of the Riverhawks. They are making their debut tonight. Opening pitch is slated for 7:05 PM MDT.
The Green Onion Cakes uniforms are green and white with yellow trim. They are a tribute to one of Edmonton’s most beloved and iconic foods. The Green Onion Cakes concept follows in the footsteps of the Talus Balls in 2023 and Silver City Dragons in 2024.
The Riverhawks/Green Onion Cakes are unbeaten after their first four regular season games. They opened up the series last night with a 6-4 victory. #35 Trent Lenihan led the way offensively with a three-run homer in the first inning. He was 1-3 on the night. #48 Matt Stagg was 2-3 with two runs scored). #21 Myles Chamberlain, the second of six Edmonton pitchers, got the win in an inning of relief for his first victory of the season. #10 Tanner Lebya pitched the ninth inning for his first save.
The Riverhawks will send right hander #20 Reece Hemmerling to the hill. Hemmerling attends South Carolina Upstate. “He has an electric young arm,“ says Riverhawks/Green Onion Cakes coach Jake Lanferman. “He plays at a Division I school. We are hoping he can do what the other four starters (#41 James Block,, #14 Tate Dearing, #8 Matthew Ridsdale and #34 Jesse Kaphing) have done so far and that is just fill it up and not do too much but give us the confidence to use the bats.”
The Riverhawks/Green Onion Cakes have scored 35 times in their first four outings.
Tonight’s game is Sasky Night (Flat out Fun). The Riverhawks will be honoring current and past residents of Saskatchewan. It is also “Sweet Treat Saturday”.
