EDMONTON-
The adage “You don’t want to disappoint the children” rang true this afternoon for the Edmonton Riverhawks.
The Hawks put smiles on the faces of over 8 thousand local children as they remained unbeaten in West Coast League play. Edmonton downed the Victoria HarbourCats 9-1 at RE/MAX Field. It was the teams annual “School Spirit and Mascot Mania” Day presented by Qualico.
The Riverhawks move to 2-0 on the year while the HarbourCats drop to 3-2.
It didn’t take long for the Riverhawks go get on the scoreboard.#16 Kyle Yip ripped a single to centerfield, stole second, moved to third on a single by DH #48 Max Stagg. Yip then stole home, evading a throw to the plate to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the 2nd, HarbourCats starter # 48 Jacob Thompson walked #5 Anthony Kodema and #23 Tyler Hummel. They were brought in on a triple to left center field by #6 Robert Phelps. Two batters later, Phelps crossed the plate on a single up the middle off the bat of #48 Max Stagg.
Thompson was pulled with the bases loaded and two out in the 2nd. He wound up giving up five runs on four hits and had one strikeout. He was replaced by #6 Nolan Bushko who got #4 Jason Fox to pop up to end the inning. Fox was the ninth Riverhawk to bat in that inning.
Victoria threatened in the top of the fourth. #27 Isiah Afework and #45 Tanner Beltowski hit back-to-back singles but neither could cross the plate.
The Riverhawks loaded the bases again in the fourth inning and made it 6-0 as #5 Kodema hit a rocket to second base that brought in Stagg across. Stag had singled up the middle to start the inning. That was followed by a walk issued to Hummel. That brought in #30 Jason Green. And it was 7-0. Before the inning was over, Hummel would score on a sacrifice by #13 Grant Yzermans which gave the home side an eight-run advantage.
In the 6th, the HarbourCats threatened to cut the deficit. Afework and McFee singled to put runners at the corners. A walk issued to Belkowski loaded the bases. The threat was extinguished when #26 Kyle Hepburn hit a blooper into the gap between second and center. Riverhawks centerfielder Yzermans dove headfirst to make the catch.
Edmonton pushed the score to 9-0 in the 6th. Kodama got aboard on a fielder’s choice and plated when Yzermans doubled to left center field.Victoria got on the board in the 7th inning. #51 Domenic Biello singled and scored.
#41 James Brock started and went five innings for his first victory of the year. He surrendered four hits and struck out three. Offensively, the Riverhawks were led by Australian Stagg who went 4-5 and scored a run. He was named the player of the game. Yzermans was 1-2 with two runs batted in. Phelps had two RBI as well and was 1-2 at the dish.
Victoria was led by #16 Enrico Carrion who was 1-3 with a run scored.
The HarbourCats and Riverhawks wind up their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM MDT. The theme for the evening is “Edmonton’s Got Talent” sponsored by NOW! Radio.
