A 13-0 shutout over Kelowna strengthen’s Edmonton’s chances at a playoff top seed

It was a record setting night for the Edmonton Riverhawks as they opened up their final West Coast League regular season series. The Riverhawks beat the visiting Kelowna Falcons 13-0. In the process, the 8,909 fans who packed RE/MAX Field helped establish a new league single season attendance record. With two more home games to go, 120,207 fans have watched the Riverhawks. That breaks the league record Edmonton set last year of 116,871.
The Riverhawks moved to 30-18 on the season while the Falcons dip to 19-30. With the win, The Riverhawks are 16-6 in the second half, tied for the WCL North Division lead with the Victoria HarbourCats who fell 5-1 in Port Angeles.
In this game, Edmonton scored 13 runs on nine hits with no errors. Kelowna had four hits and committed two errors.
The scoring started early for the home team. Bottom of the first inning and #13 GrantYzermans walked and advanced to second on a fielders choice. With one out, #36 Mitchell Middlemiss drove a #11 Carson Kimball offering to right field. Kelowna's #16 Kamryn Link misplayed the ball and it rolled behind him. While he scrambled for the ball, Middlemiss utilized his speed to notch an ‘inside the park’ two run homer to give Edmonton a 2-0 advantage. The Riverhawks added to their total in the bottom of the third. #16 Kyle Yip was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With two out, he scored when #32 Jason Green singled up the middle to give Edmonton a 3-0 lead.In the bottom of the fifth, Green pummeled a # 35 Teagan Ribbink offering over the fence in right center field. It travelled 418 feet for his seventh homer of the season and was a two-run shot as # 35 Trent Lenihan was aboard on a fielders choice. Edmonton led 5-0.The Riverhawks went up by nine in the bottom of the sixth. # 50 Chavis Conceicao and #4Jason Fox hit back-to-back singles. Yeomans walked to load the bases which brought up Yip who stroked it to the gap in left centre field to score both Conceicao and Fox. Middlemiss stepped in and ripped the ball which went under the glove of Falcons third baseman # 17 Tyler Garrilano. He was charged an error as both Yeomans and Yip plated.The Riverhawks hit double digits in the bottom of the seventh. #1 Shiro Sato walked and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Fox. Pinch hitter #28 David Ossanna came into the game for Edmonton and hit a looper over the head of Falcons first baseman # 7 Josiah Mackay. That scored # 23 Noah Brooks from second. That made it 11-0.The onslaught continued in inning number eight. #54 Caedyn Colford was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, he scored when Conceicao sacrificed to center field. The Riverhawks made it 13-0 as Fox hit a shot to left field which drove in #10 Brayden Morris who had earlier walked.#31 Riley Barrett was the winning pitcher. He tossed eight innings of four hit ball for the Riverhawks, striking out five and walking one. He is 4-1 on the year.
Kimball took the loss for the Falcons and is 1-3 as he went three innings giving up three runs on three hits, striking out five and walking three.Edmonton was led offensively by Green who was 2-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Middlemiss was 1-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
The promotion this night was:ABBA Dance Party! And Military Appreciation along with Fireworks Friday with Uncle John’s Fireworks.The Riverhawks and Falcons will do battle in the second of this three-game final homestand tomorrow at RE/MAX Field. Opening pitch will be at 7:05 PM MDT.

EXTRA INNINGS: The ceremonial “first pitch” was thrown out tonight by former NHL’er Jason Strudwick. It was announced earlier in the day that the Riverhawks have clinched a playoff spot and as positions are still being finalized, there is a real possibility that the team will host at least one post season game. The opening round series, which begins August 8th will be a best of three affair.
