Another Shutout As Hawks Beat Kelowna 11-0

Hawks have put up 24 straight unanswered runs against the Falcons

EDMONTON, AB– The Edmonton Riverhawks extended their winning streak to five games as they downed the Kelowna Falcons 11-0 Saturday (Aug 2) at RE/MAX Field.
6,697 fans were on hand to celebrate 90’s night and the 30th anniversary of RE/MAX Field. That raised the West Coast League record for single season attendance to 126,904 with one more home game to play.
The victory improved the Riverhawks record to 31-18. Kelowna fell to 19-31. Edmonton remains tied with the Victoria HarbourCats for first place in the WCL North division second half standings. Victoria won Saturday night in Port Angeles. Both teams are 17-6.
The home team scored 11 runs on 14 hits and had one error. Kelowna had five hits and committed five errors.
The Riverhawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. It was an inning where Edmonton sent nine players to the plate. #32 Jason Green singled to left field, made it to third on a throwing error charged to Falcons shortstop # 38 Jace Nagler. He scored when #5 Anthony Kodama hit a low dribbler into the infield and beat the throw to first base. Edmonton promptly loaded the bases; Kelowna starter # 26 Jackson Mayo delivered a two out pitch to #13 Grant Yzermans. Yzermans blew the ball down the left field line which scored two runs. That brought up #48 Matt Stagg who delivered the ball to Nagler who bobbled the ball allowing him to make it to first on the error and brought in # 50 Chavis Conceicao to make it 4-0. #35 Trent Lenihan came to the dish and promptly delivered a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Yzermans to plate and it was 5-0.
Kelowna threatened in the top of the third and loaded the bases with one out. Riverhawks starter #15 Jack Becker promptly rang up back-to-back strikeouts fanning # 17 Tyler Garritano and #4 Mathieu Morin to get out of the inning.
The Riverhawks upped their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Green walked and made it to third on a single from #4 Jaxon Fox. Green then stole home to make it 6-0. One out later, Fox would score when Conceicao placed the ball into the gap between the infield and right field make it 7-0.
In the sixth inning, # 29 Taichi Nakao led off with a double down the left field line. He scored the eighth Edmonton run when Stagg blasted a one out single into left. Stagg would plate when Green hit a monster shot which bounced off the wall in right field. Green wound up with a double and would score two batters later as Fox singled to up the count to 10-0.
The Riverhawks made it 11-0 as # 54 Caedyn Colford got on base as his hit snuck underneath the Falcons third baseman #2 Austin Burd’s glove. He scored when pinch hitter # 12 Steve Watters found the gap in left center field and picked up an RBI double.
Yzermans led the Riverhawks offensively going two for three with two runs batted in and one run scored. Green was two for three with three runs scored and a run batted in. Fox was two for four with two runs scored and a run batted in. Stagg was one for four with a run batted in and a run scored. Kodama wound up one for five with two runs batted in.
Kelowna was led by #29 Max Bledy who was two for four. # 38 Jace Nagler was one for four.
#27 Mitchell Henrich, one of four relievers earned the victory for Edmonton. He pitched one inning and faced four batters. He improves to 2-1 on the year. Kelowna starter # 26 Jackson Mayo was the loser. He tossed two innings giving up five runs on six hits, striking out three and facing 14 batters. He is 1-1 on the season.
With the victory, the Riverhawks have squared their all-time record with the Falcons at 13-13. This season, with one more game to go, Edmonton holds a 6-2 advantage in the head-to head showdown. Edmonton wore their special “Green Onion Cakes” uniforms for the last time this season. They auctioned the jerseys off afterwards with money going towards the Riverhawks program which helps youngsters take up baseball. Wearing the special theme uniforms this season, the Riverhawks improved to 8-2.
