Riverhawks give up late inning runs, split series with Lefties

PORT ANGELES, WA—The Edmonton Riverhawks are leaving Port Angeles, Washington with a split in their West Coast League weekend series. The Hawks dropped an 8-2 decision to the host Lefties at Civic Field on Sunday (July 19). Edmonton had won the first two games of the four-game set before dropping the last two to Port Angeles.

The result leaves the Riverhawks, who are trying to mount a late season search for a WCL playoff series with a 21-18 record. The Lefties are 10-19. Edmonton is 6-4 in their last 10 starts.

Port Angeles scored eight runs on 13 hits with one error. They scored two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth en route to the victory.

The Riverhawks scored all their runs in the seventh inning. #3 Devin Simonson doubled to right center field to bring home #51 Easton Andrews. Andrews was earlier hit by a pitch. #25 Matt Vanslyke had a sacrifice line out to center field to plate #48 Max Stagg. Stagg had walked earlier in the inning. Simonson was 1 for 3 to lead Edmonton offensively.

#18 Dillon Carrell of the Lefties started and pitched six innings of no-hit ball, walking five and striking out six. He is 1 and 1 on the year. #36 David Zambelli tossed three innings of relief to pick up his first save. He struck out three and walked two.

#41 Trey Nance got the start for Edmonton. He went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits, with four strikeouts and a walk. He was the first of five Riverhawks pitchers. His record dropped to 2 and 1.

Port Angeles was led by #24 Ethan Wood. Wood hit a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Lefties a 3-0 lead. He was 4 for 5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. # 2 Garrett Patteson was also 4 for 5 with two RBI and three runs scored. He had a two run double down the left field line scoring #20 Thoma Holden and #11 Sam Matosich in the eighth inning.

The Riverhawks return home to entertain the Kamloops NorthPaws in a series starting Monday (July 20th). Edmonton is 14-10 lifetime against Kamloops. #7 Jack Becker is expected to get the call to start for the Hawks. Opening pitch is 7:05 PM MDT at RE/MAX Field.
