Riverhawks Drop Penultimate Home Series to NorthPaws

Kamloops scored big early, and the Hawks couldn't catch up

EDMONTON, AB—The Kamloops NorthPaws are leaving Alberta’s capital with two victories in three games against the host Edmonton Riverhawks. After splitting the first two games of their West Coast League series, the NorthPaws exploded for seven runs in the first inning and coasted to a 15-2 victory over the Riverhawks. There were 5,022 fans on hand at RE/MAX Field for the Wednesday (July 23) tilt.
The NorthPaws move to 17-25 on the season while the Riverhawks fall to 22-20. Kamloops scored 15 runs on 15 hits with three errors. The Hawks had two runs on six hits and one error.
Edmonton started 6’6” Beaumont, Alberta lefty #52 Sam Davis in his first WCL appearance. He began the game by hitting the leagues home run leader #4 Kade Crawford. Crawford would score the first run when he came in on a sacrifice fly by #16 Evan Dugdale to right field.
Two batters later, Kamloops’ third baseman #22 Matt Macdonald took Davis over the wall in left field for a three-run homer. It was the Kamloops resident’s first homer of the West Coast League season. NorthPaws took a 4-0 lead. They would make it 5-0 when #33 Logan Booth put it into right field, scoring # 22 Tate Martin. That was all for Davis who was taken out in favour of #12 Riley Sturko. Booth and #26 Jackson Glymph would later score on an RBI single from Crawford as the NorthPaws sent 11 men to the plate. Davis was tagged for seven runs on five hits in a third of an inning and took the loss. He was one of eight pitchers utilized by the Riverhawks in this contest.
The NorthPaws enlarged their lead in the top of the third. Booth got on base courtesy of a fielding error charged to Riverhawks first baseman #51 Easton Andrews. He scored on a sacrifice fly to centre by # 5 Jared Hall. Crawford singled to left field and brought in #1 Tanner Mitchell to make it 9-0.
Kamloops moved into double-digit territory in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Mitchell walked to bring home MacDonald from third base with the visitors 10th run of the night.
In the seventh, Booth singled to right to start the inning and scored on a fielders choice to first base with the 11th run of the night. That was followed by Crawford coming home on a #40 Rece Allensworth wild pitch. Crawford plated with Kamloops’ 13th run on a Dugdale sacrifice to centre field.
The Riverhawks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, #57 Finnegan Stewart walked and scored on a # 3 Devin Simonton ground ball.
The NorthPaws loaded the bases off Riverhawk reliever # 42 Kael Poland and went up 14-1 when Mitchell walked to bring home MacDonald who had been hit by a pitch to start the eighth inning.
And they weren’t done. Top of the 9th, facing #60 Heath Hachkowski, Booth sent a shot to left field which brough home # 29 Brock Grainger raising the score to 15-1 NorthPaws.
Bottom the ninth saw #47 Jake Tanner kick it off with a triple to right center field. Two batters later, #29 Dylan Chopp drove him home with a single to left field.
#17 Alex Lee of Burnaby, BC got the start for Kamloops. He was effective going seven innings of three hit ball, giving up one run, striking out four and walking one.
Offensively, The NorthPaws were led by MacDonald who was two for three with three RBI. Dugdale was 1 for 2 with 3 RBI. Simonton was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Edmonton. Middlemiss was also 1 for 3.
The Riverhawks will continue their final West Coast League homestand on Friday (July 25) when the Kelowna Falcons invade RE/MAX Field. Opening pitch is 7:05 PM at RE/MAX Field. The NorthPaws will head to the West Coast for a series against the HarbourCats in Victoria starting Friday.
The Riverhawks and NorthPaws will continue their month of July battle next Tuesday (July 28) at Dearborn Ford Field in Kamloops.
