Roughed Up By AppleSox, Hawks Struggle at the Plate

Another roughing up of the Edmonton Riverhawks at the hands of the Wenatchee AppleSox tonight, as the Hawks were only able to scratch a single run while their opponents went on a hitting spree. Pitching struggles only exacerbated troubles caused by a silent lineup at the plate. With Myles Chamberlain extending to a five inning start from his usual bullpen assignment, the Hawks weren’t able to score a hit during his entire appearance. The Edmonton offence struck out a combined thirteen times in the 8-1 loss, doing no favours to try and help the pitching staff.

This loss puts the AppleSox half a game ahead of the Riverhawks in the overall standings and narrows the second half gap between the two teams to 1.5 games. It continues Wenatchee’s winning streak, now at seven games, and further’s Edmonton’s distance from the division-leading HarbourCats to 1.5 games.

It didn’t take long for Edmonton to hit the scoreboard as #13 Grant Yzermans saw a five pitch walk come in with one out in the 1st, which was followed by a stolen base and a Wenatchee E6 to allow Yzermans to score. Early action without even a hit from the Hawks. Going hitless would continue into the 7th inning, until #32 Jason Green earned the Hawks’ first base knock of the game.

Making only his second start in his fifteenth appearance of the season, #21 Myles Chamberlain was burned by an early unearned run thanks to a 1st inning E5. This balanced the initial score to a 1-1 game with neither team earning a hit until the bottom of the 2nd. More trouble in the 3rd, as after cruising through a pair of quick outs, Chamberlain gave up three singles in a row to allow the AppleSox to get ahead. Another frame of solid work was marred as a wild pitch allowed a runner to score in the 4th with two outs. Throwing over twenty pitcheseach in the 3rd and 4th, Chamberlain had to battle through many of his at bats while also getting limited rest as the Hawks were held hitless through Myles’ appearance. Giving up three hits in a row to lead off the bottom of the 5th, some of the potential damage was mitigated with a 5-2-1 rundown double play, but Wenatchee earned their fifth run off their ninth hit given up by Chamberlain.

Taking over for the 6th, #30 Spencer Mueller faced similar trouble right off the bat. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bags with one out, then a single to right brought a pair of the runners home. A messy inning continued, as a wild pitch allowed another run to plate for Wenatchee before Mueller could contain things with his second K. #11 Brandon Craven pitched the 7th, he only allowed a pair of walks as he managed to keep Wenatchee off the scoreboard for the first time since the 2nd. Craven would have an even easier 8th, with just a walk given up that led into a double play to finish the frame.

The series wraps up tomorrow night, as the Hawks will try to turn the tables against the AppleSox. The squad then ships off for a weekend series against the Kelowna Falcons before retuning to Edmonton for the final home stand of the year.
