EDMONTON, AB—
The Edmonton Riverhawks rallied from a one run deficit to score four times and move back into the win column in the West Coast League. Playing before 3,614 fans at RE/MAX Field, the Riverhawks beat the Port Angeles Lefties 6-3. This was the conclusion of their three game series, and Edmonton took two of three from Port Angeles.
The victory moves Edmonton to 14-12 with one game left to play in the first half of the WCL season. The Lefties fall to 11-16 as a first half record. The Riverhawks will make up a rained out game with Victoria later this season.
The Riverhawks got on the sticks early. #6 Robert Phelps led off the inning with a rocket to the wall in left field and wound up with a double. After stealing third, Phelps came home on a fielders choice. Two batters later, #35 Trent Lenihan tripled off Lefties stater #27 Liam Karlson to left center field. The next batter was #36 Mitchell Middlemiss who’s single to left field scored Lenihan.
Karlson pitched four innings, giving up those two runs on four hits
The Lefties got to Riverhawks starter #10 Tanner Leyba in the fifth inning. They scored three runs on four hits. Leyba left after that inning-going 5.0, surrendering six hits, three runs, striking out five and walking one against 22 batters.
He was replaced by #21 Myles Chamberlain. Chamberlain pitched two innings of one hit ball while walking one. He picked up his fourth win of the season.
The Riverhawks scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. #42 Drew Veach was hit by Lefties reliever #15 Jake Cumming to start the inning. He advanced to third when the next batter #5 Anthony Kodama stroked a single to right field, then #13 Grant Yzermans walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Lenihan crushed a monster shot to right field which went over the outfielders head. Three runs scored as Lenihan wound up with his second triple of the contest. Lenihan later plated on a passed ball putting Edmonton up 6-3. Cumming was tagged with the loss as he went that one inning, giving up two hits and four earned runs.
#40 Rece Allensworth came on to get the final three outs in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the year. He has appeared in 11 games in 2025.
“Our bats came up with some massive hits,” said Riverhawks head coach Jake Lanferman as he reflected on the series. “Lenihan came up with that bases clearing triple tonight. I think defensively we had a pretty good game tonight. Overall, minus game two (a 16-7 loss Thursday), we did a good job to put it all together coming back from that road trip (where Edmonton won once in five starts.”
Lanferman said the fact the Riverhawks rebounded from that defeat speaks to make up of his squad. “ It is a testament to the personalities we have in there (the dugout). The character of our returners. They do a very good job of leading. They make our coaches lives easier with the way they lead the other players. As soon as one of those guys go—everybody else joins them. It was really fun to watch. Its really fun to watch how these guys have grown over the years. How they come back to Edmonton and be really exemplary role models for our guys.”
Offensively, Lenihan was 3-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in as he was named the player of the game for the Riverhawks. Phelps was 2-5 with two runs scored and Middlemiss was 1-4 with a run batted in.
Port Angeles was led offensively by Giesegh who was 1-2 with a run scored and a run batted in.
