It was all Edmonton Riverhawks tonight, as they ran the score up against the Nanaimo NightOwls to end up with a 10-1 victory. It was a combined contribution from the entire lineup and backed up by a quality start from Reece Hemmerling on the mound and 4231 fans in the stands. Some big performances from the Hawks included Robert Phelps’ 3-hit, 5 stolen base record, and Trent Lenihan’s 2-hit 2-RBI game. It wasn’t just the heart of the order contributing, debuting Riverhawk Tyree Reed earned two hits and an RBI in his first game with the squad.
The Riverhawks were ready from the get-go, as #6 Robert Phelps knocked a first pitch single to left field. After #48 Max Stagg took a walk, #35 Trent Lenihan belted a warning track double to score Phelps and give the Hawks an early lead. The rally continued into the 2nd inning, as a leadoff double from #26 Mitchell MIddlemiss was followed by a fly ball from #50 Chavis Conceicao, moving Middlemiss to third. #1 Shiryu Sato knocked a 6-3 groundout, but it was enough of a distraction to score Middlemiss and make it a 2-0 game.
More action in the 3rd, as Stag hit a one out single and Lenihan walked. That set the scene for debuting Riverhawk #25 Tyree Reed to drill a hard hit double and score his university teammate Stagg. A sac fly from #13 Grant Yzermans brought home Lenihan and made it a 4–0 game after three.
Back to it after a quiet 4th, a rally erupted in the 5th from Stagg’s leadoff walk. Reed followed with a single, and both stole a base before Stagg was able to run home on a wild pitch. Another sac fly from Yzermans gave the Hawks their second two-run inning of the game.
With one out in the 6th, Phelps knocked his third hit of the game, then proceeded to steal both second and third to make it five nabbed bags in the game! Stagg smacked a laser shot to left to score Phelps. Lenihan followed with another hit to left bringing home #4 Jaxon Fox who had walked after Phelps. A two-out E4 from Nanaimo with the bags loaded sent the score into double digits, as Stagg and Lenihan ran home on the misplay. Looking to join the hit parade in the 7th was Sato, who hit an automatic double that bounced over the field in left of his second pitch of the frame. But no other Riverhawks would be able to back him up as the 7th became only their second scoreless inning of the game
Unhappy with just 10 runs, a couple of bench bats helped the Hawks even more, as singles from #12 Stevie Waters and Yzermans were both brought home by a #37 Brock McMullin 2 RBI base hit to left.
In his fifth start of the season, #20 Reece Hemmerling kept the NightOwls at bay through 6.0 innings of work. Aside from a few singles, Hemmerling was able to deftly dispatch Nanaimo, retiring 6 batters in a row between the 2nd and 3rd. The first real trouble Reece faced was briefly in the 4th, as a leadoff triple was scored on the next pitch by a sacrifice fly. Notching his fourth swinging strikeout of the game, Hemmerling sopped any more momentum from Nanaimo. Pitching into the 6th, Hemmerling got a break as what looked like a dribbler that could have sent a runner to third was instead ruled an out due to runner’s interference. Working through 6.0 innings, Hemmerling tossed 6 swinging strikeouts, was tagged with 1 earned run, and 5 hits. Reece didn’t allow a single walk across his entire appearance.
Taking over in the 7th was #21 Myles Chamberlain, who’s only misgiving in the inning was a two out double that bounced on the left line to stay fair. A grounder to first ended the frame and kept the score clean. The Hawks’ second Reece of the game #24 Reece Devlin took over for the 8th, allowing two two-out walks, but finishing the inning with a swinging K. Finishing off the game with a debut from #52 Lucas Weber-Kitching who gave up just a walk in an otherwise easy inning.
The win puts the Riverhawks at a 16-13 on the season and 2-1 in the second half. Nanaimo falls to 13-17 and 1-2 in the second half. The Riverhawks now head on the road to face the Bellingham Bells and Port Angeles Lefties. The All-Star break follows the road trip, so the Hawks won’t be back to RE/MAX Field until July 18 for Star Wars Night.
