The Riverhawks honoured Edmonton baseball history today by taking a 5-4 extra-innings win against the Victoria HarbourCats while donning the same jerseys the Pacific Coast League’s Edmonton Trappers wore from 1993-2000. The 10th inning run came as DH #7 Tommy Takayoshi singled to safely reach base. #1 Kaden Zarowny pinch ran for Takayoshi from then on, stealing second then being driven home as the game winning run by #47 Will Vasseur who had pinch hit earlier in the game, and stayed playing shortstop. The win earns the Riverhawks their first sweep of the season, moves their record to 10-5, and makes it a 7-2 home stand.

It was a thrilling 9th inning rally where the Riverhawks pushed the game into extra innings by earning a 4-4 tie. The frame started with back-to-back-to-back singles by #26 Russell Young, #54 Sam Kane, and #6 Taichi Nakao. #36 Jacob Poturnak got his first hit of the game with a 2 RBI single up the left field line and tied it up to prevent the HarbourCats from winning.

The Riverhawks got on the board in the 4th thanks to a #15 Jonny McGill sac bunt. The infield tapper moved up #35 Trent Lenihan, who had singled to lead off the inning. No HarbourCats were left covering third base so Lenihan made a heads up play to keep running and forced a throwing error on Victoria, so Lenihan trotted home with the ball tossed into foul territory.

In the. bottom of the 7th facing a larger deficit, #6 Taichi Nakao got plunked to be gifted first. Nakao made it to third on back-to-back wild pitches, and was then sent home by #5 Bryce McFeely with a drive up the middle.

Similar to the Riverhawks in the previous game, the HarbourCats jumped onto the scoreboard early. A leadoff triple was followed by a deep sac fly to secure the first run of the game. A pair of singles followed, but starter #23 Brady Kobitowich was able to lock in and secure the inning without any more runs crossing the plate for Victoria in the 1st. Kobitowich would pitch through the 3rd, with three Ks and an earned run on his record.

The Hawks would cycle through a crew of relievers after Kobitowich, starting with #43 Rory Lampe who tossed the 4th only allowing a hit batter to get on base. #50 Brendan Brunette followed, pitching the 5th and the righty was only blemished by a single walk. The parade continued with #52 Evan Wilde, the Riverhawks’ second lefty arm of the game who walked a pair but shut down the 6th after allowing a run. Pitching the 7th, #21 Myles Chamberlain got a quick first out, but three hits, an error, and a sac fly brought a pair of runs across the plate. The 9th frame was tossed by #18 Riley Barrett, who only had a walk against his record. Finally, #55 Jackson Sherran tossed a perfect 10th to keep the Hawks in the game.

The Riverhawks get a travel day on Monday, then begin their second road trip of the season on Tuesday in Kelowna. After three games against the Falcons, the Hawks will play a weekend set against the NorthPaws in Kamloops before heading back to RE/MAX Field. The next home stand begins Tuesday June 25, and is the first of another nine game set culminating in a Canada Day spectacular. Visit gohawks.ca/tickets to get your spot at every upcoming home game.
