A 6-1 loss to Bellingham puts the first-half playoff berth in danger

Box Score

By Cody F. Schmidt

A quiet game for the Edmonton Riverhawks, who were unable to get much momentum in any of their innings at bat. The Bellingham Bells took both this series and the season series with the Hawks and both teams exit with 15-9 records.

The Riverhawks got a brief two-out rally going in the 5th, as #12 Rex Watson singled with a drop into the gap. The Hawks capitalized thanks to #6 Taichi Nakao tripling with a ball sent deep into centre-right, with the Bells’ CF unable to avoid slipping on the play.

Making his second start of the season, #38 David Stuart got jumped by the Bells in the 1st from a solo homer. Stuart settled in for the next two innings, just giving up a hit and a pair of walks inn the 2nd and 3rd. Unable to close out the 4th, Stuart finished with 3.2+ innings pitched and two runs credited thanks to another Bells rally. The 4th was completed by #21 Myles Chamberlain, but not before the Bells tacked on another couple runs from a triple. After a 1-2-3 5th, the Bells tagged Chamberlain with another triple to lead off the 6th, the run would score on a groundout and was the first credited to Myles.

With the Hawks looking to get the Bells quiet, #52 Evan Wilde got the mound in the 7th and tossed a three-up-three-down frame. #18 Riley Barrett’s 8th went similarly aside from a leadoff walk, and the 9th went 1-2-3 courtesy of #40 Hayden Morrison.

The Riverhawks only have three games left in their first half, and their chances will rest on how well they can do against the Port Angeles Lefties, and how the series between the Bells and Wenatchee AppleSox goes. Tomorrow is a rare Friday off for the Riverhawks, but they’ll be back in action over the long weekend. Starting with Love Wins Pride Night with MacEwan University on Saturday, the fun continues with Player Card day on Sunday and finishes with a Canada Day spectacular.
