The Wenatchee Apple Sox spoiled a beautiful evening at RE/MAX Field, as they scored ten more runs than the Edmonton Riverhawks. While the Hawks graced the field with their Talus Balls uniforms, the result was not quite as sterling.

It was a tale of two Halens tonight, as starter #33 Halen Knoll absolutely cruised through his first three innings, but faltered when back out for the 4th. Perfect through the 3rd, Knoll suddenly struggled with location when he came out in the 4th inning. Walking four and allowing three hits, it was like a completely different pitcher had taken the mound. Knoll ended up being charged with four AppleSox runs, unable to finish the 4th, he pitched 3.2 innings with the drastic change in performance being his downfall tonight.

Taking over from Knoll was #44 Brendan Wabick who tossed 2.2 innings, only surrendering a single run off three hits. From there relief pitching took a turn, as #27 Brendan Loeppky and #35 Graham Seltzer struggled to get through the 7th inning. Loeppky saw six batters, but only recorded a single out, striking out the first AppleSox batter he saw. Charged with five earned runs on just two hits, Loeppky was replaced with Seltzer who after a walk was able to close out the frame. Seltzer returned for the 8th, and was hit around for another two runs, but regained control to finish the inning. #43 Heath Hachkowski covered the 9th inning, with a walk that was later erased on a double play.

The early run for the Talus Balls came as #15 Daniel Calabrese reached second on an AppleSox error, then was driven home by #14 Tommy Takayoshi, hitting his first of many singles of the game. The Hawks added on one more run in the 7th, as #9 Skyler Chang and Calabrese hit back to back singles, and Chang was brought home on an RBI fielder’s choice by Takayoshi.

Tommy Takayoshi had the best night at the plate for the Hawks, going 3-for-4 and earning both Hawks RBI. Takayoshi also reached on a HBP in the 9th and was able to move up from a wild pitch to #28 Mark Ossanna before scoring on #19 Will Gardner’s single.

The Riverhawks will give it another try tomorrow night, and we’ll host a Canada Day Spectacular along with 630 CHED and ArrKann Camping. First pitch is at 7:05pm, and you get get your spot for the game AND fireworks at tickets.gohawks.ca.
