July 3 Game Summary
Box Scoreby Cody Schmidt
Your Edmonton Riverhawks were up for a battle on this Sunday afternoon. With 17 runs and 31 hits between the teams, the Hawks traded blows back and forth for the whole game, emerging victorious. Spreading runs across four innings, the Riverhawks took hold of the comeback win in the 7th, and leveraged the bullpen to finish off the 8-9 ballgame ahead of the Nanaimo NightOwls.
Leading the Riverhawks at the plate was #33 Alex Stinnett, who stung NightOwls pitchers for four hits, including a double. #38 Jack Gurevitch has kept his average at an obscene .600 through two games with the Riverhawks, and #15 Jacob McKeon is right behind him batting .571. Gurevitch also managed three hits and three RBI on the afternoon, making a major impression on the lineup. #10 Clayton Loranger continues his reign atop the WCL batting leaderboard, keeping a four game hitting streak and stealing two bases in the game to put him alone at second place on the SB chart.
Edmonton pitching was a bit of a revolving door, with no pitcher making it past 6 ours of work. Seven pitchers took the mound for the Riverhawks through the game, as starter #32 Isaak Martinez was roughed up for six earned runs in the second inning after a strong first. While cycling through pitchers from the arm barn, the Riverhawks managed to keep the NightOwls offence down, though a few more runs did sneak though in packed situations. #8 Matt Masciangelo is credited with the win, taking over in the 7th with two runners in scoring position. Shutting down the inning, Masciangelo earned the win while throwing only one out, as #31 Mikiah Negrete pitched a scoreless 8th, and #12 Cameron Liss earned his first save on the season with a hitless 9th.
This win ties the season series between the Riverhawks and the NightOwls at 3-3, and ends the first half of the 2022 WCL season with a 11-15 record for the Hawks. With a travel day tomorrow, the Riverhawks will take on the division-leading Bellingham Bells in Washington, Tuesday through Thursday. The Bells only lost their 6th game of the year on Saturday, and will be fierce competition if the Riverhawks want to make up any space in the North Division standings.
