Riverhawks shortstop and WCL All-Star selected in the 19th round of the 2025 MLB Draft
Flying to Philly!
Riverhawks shortstop Robert Phelps is headed to the big leagues after being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 19th round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
The Pittsburgh native quickly became a fan favourite in Edmonton this season. In 32 games, he posted a .284 batting average, collected 38 hits, scored 31 runs, and stole 19 bases including an electrifying five-steal performance in a single game, setting a new Riverhawks record.
Just last week, he was named a West Coast League All-Star, a well-deserved honour that reflects his all-around impact this summer. That well-rounded game is exactly what Head Coach Jake Lanferman believes makes him so appealing.
"He is a special type of player with multiple pro tools," said Lanferman. "Robbie has been a spark plug for us as our leadoff hitter all summer. He has one of the best gloves I've seen come through our program and he's always competing with a huge smile on his face."
Prior to his time in Edmonton, Phelps made a strong impression at Reinhardt University, where he put together an impressive season with 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, showing the same blend of power and speed that defined his summer with the Riverhawks.
With this selection, he becomes the 9th former Riverhawk to be drafted to Major League organizations.
"We're proud that he was able to call Edmonton home for a summer and exvited to watch his professional journey begin," said Lanferman.
Congrats on making a dream come true, Robbie!
