Introducing the Riverhawks Community Foundation!

2025-02-06

Tickets for the Field of Dreams Gala with Joe Carter on Sale Now!

Launching in 2024, the Riverhawks Community Foundation has begun to build roots in Edmonton and area, ensuring that no child is held back from the joy and growth that sport provides. By covering costs like registration fees, equipment, and camp expenses, this nonprofit arm of the Riverhawks Baseball Club is opening doors to athletic opportunities for kids, regardless of their financial situation.

“Sports provide kids the opportunity to build resilience, character, and communication skills—all things that set them up for a better future,” Michael Walters, President of the Community Foundation, said. “If we can give as many kids as possible the opportunity to develop those skills, it will be a win for our whole city.”

The Foundation is focused on making an impact through several fundraising efforts throughout the year. During the season, Riverhawks fans can help raise funds by participating in the 50/50 draws at home games. This off-season, the Foundation is gearing up for their first-ever Field of Dreams “Un-GalaGala, which will feature a very special keynote speaker: Toronto Blue Jays legend Joe Carter.

You might be wondering, what exactly is an Un-Gala Gala? It’s designed to be a fun twist on the traditional fundraising gala, where guests can skip the tux and gowns and instead rock jeans and their favorite sports jerseys. It’s all about comfort and having a good time!

The event will also feature a pitching machine (perfect for those who want to relive their glory days), as well as silent and live auctions. Dinner, stories from a baseball legend, live music, and dancing will round out what promises to be a memorable evening. All funds raised will go directly to the Riverhawks Foundation, which has already begun supporting local youth baseball and softball programs in Edmonton and area.

“Some of the first grants we gave out this year went to several minor baseball organizations across the region, primarily to build and grow girls' programs,” Walters shared. "We've also provided bursaries for individual players who need a little extra help with registration or equipment.”

Dr. Randy Gregg, Managing Director of the Riverhawks Baseball Club, echoed Walters’ sentiments about the Foundation's mission.

“When we started the Riverhawks Baseball Club, we thought we’d get some support, but we have, quite frankly, been humbled by the support we've received from the community. Now, we want to turn around and give this support back,” Gregg explains. “There are great amateur minor baseball and softball organizations in this City, and we’d like to be able to support them as much as we can, whether they're looking to develop facilities or augment the programs that they already have."

The Field of Dreams Un-Gala Gala is only the beginning, as the Riverhawks Foundation plans to launch several other initiatives to further its mission.

"The Foundation has started from humble beginnings, and we’re excited to raise more money from this Gala and beyond to give kids the chance to play this great game,” explains Walters.

The Foundation’s long-term vision is to continue developing youth leadership through sport. It’s not just about creating athletes; it’s about shaping tomorrow’s leaders with the values of perseverance, fair play, and the spirit of Edmonton.

The Field of Dreams Gala will take place on April 5th, 2025, at the Wyndham South Hotel and Conference Centre. To learn more about the Riverhawks Community Foundation and ways to support their mission, including tickets for the upcoming Field of Dreams "Un-Gala" Gala, visit their website here.
